India has demanded a thorough US investigation after a 19-year-old Illinois teenager was accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple near Chicago. Alexandros Paporakis allegedly arrived near the temple with a rifle, ammunition and tactical equipment. The weapon reportedly malfunctioned. He later sent a video of the failed firing attempt to a co-worker, who alerted police. Prosecutors say the teenager openly identified as a white supremacist and made hateful comments about Indians. Investigators suspect the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora may have been the intended target. The case has renewed concerns over anti-Hindu and anti-India hate in America. Indian-American groups and US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi have warned that online extremism can become real-world violence. With anti-South Asian rhetoric rising online and the US midterms approaching, India wants Washington to act before hate turns into another attack.
